"Art-Full" Journal

You do not have to be an artist or a professional writer to keep an "art-filled" journal. You will explore the world of illustrated journaling using many different materials such as watercolor, colored pencils, pen and ink, collage, clipart, and photos to name a few. Create a memory journal for that once in a lifetime trip or find new meaning in your daily life as you explore the connection between creativity and joy. Patrol Carbine Rifle .223

This course will cover the tactical aspects of carbine rifles in law enforcement situations. The course is for .223 caliber rifles only. This advanced course is for officers who have taken the first-level course or are proficient using this rifle.

Rapid Deployment-10 Hours

This course covers rapid response to an active shooter. The scenarios are easily applied to school or workplace situations. This course was created under the direction of North Carolina’s Attorney General with the intent that all officers would receive the training. Officer’s duty gear is required.

Taser Certification-8 Hours

This class introduces the officer to the proper use and care of the M26 and X26 Tasers. The course will examine the history of Taser use and proper application. Each officer will be introduced to the effects of being exposed to the X26 and have the opportunity to fire a Taser during the course training.

Verbal Judo-8 Hours

In the Verbal Judo course, the student will learn to effectively communicate through tactical language designed to achieve their professional goals. The student will understand that training makes words into a powerful tool to persuade people to voluntarily comply with an officer’s instruction. Verbal Judo will give officers the tactics they need to find solutions to potentially difficult situations and communicate with difficult people without shaming, blaming, or manipulating. It will also show officers how to safely take action when words fail.

Nursing Assistant

Nursing Assistant I Required for Associate Degree Nursing and Practical Nursing Programs

To be eligible for admission to the Fall 2011 Associate Degree Nursing and Practical Nursing programs, applicants will be required to provide the following documents by Jan. 28, 2011:

  • A documented current credential as a Nurse Aide I from the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation
  • A Certificate of Completion from a state approved training program OR
  • A transcript showing satisfactory completion of a state approved Nurse Aide training program

Nurse Aide Level I helps to prepare for this requirement. Classes fill up quickly. Class size is limited to 20 students. Madison Center class size is limited to 10 students. Registration for Nurse Aide Level I and II

Students must register in person for NA I or NA II classes.

  1. Bring with you the negative results of a tuberculosis (TB) skin test. This test is available at a doctor’s office, urgent care center, or a County Health Department (for a minimal charge) and could take 72 hours to complete.
  2. Make sure you have a non-expired, government issued picture ID, such as a U.S. driver’s license or a U.S. passport.
  3. Make sure you have a U.S. Social Security card issued by the Social Security Administration. This must be the actual card, not a photocopy. If you do not have your original card, you can apply for a duplicate at the Social Security Administration Office off Chunns Cove Road in the Center Park Office Complex on Piney Mountain Road. The name on your picture ID and the Social Security card must match.
  4. Tuition: $181.25

Activity Professional, MEPAP Level 1

The MEPAP 2nd Edition is geared toward activity parishioners who practice the complete range of partial or full care settings on the continuum of health services. MEPAP Second Edition provides a unified, cohesive educational approach that can be applied in every state. The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of diagnostic groups, and assessment processes, activity programming and governmental and Federal regulations, documentation requirements in all settings. These include, but are not limited to, home health services, board and care homes, residential retirement communities, special care units, skilled and intermediate nursing facilities, hospice, and hospitals. This course represents the first level of MEPAP, students will cover Section 1, Professional Foundations - Core Content areas 1-7. Students will participate in 60 hours of classroom instruction and 60 hours of supervised practicum experience. (120 hrs)

Medication Aide

This course is designed to meet the training requirements for becoming qualified as a Medication Aide. Students must already be listed as a current Nurse Aide in North Carolina and hold a High School Diploma or GED prior to taking the course. The course will cover the six rights of medication administration via the oral, topical and instillation routes, medical asepsis, hand hygiene, terminology and legal implications. Upon completion, students can take the competency exam, offered by Pearson Vue, and will be able to demonstrate skills necessary to qualify for listing on the North Carolina Medication Aide Registry. (24 hrs)

Equine Studies and Management

This course is designed to provide students with fundamental training in various equine industry topics to assist them with employment opportunities in this field. Students will learn safe horse handling, equine grooming, equine anatomy and physiology and proper use of equipment. The fundamentals of riding are included as time allows; maximum riding weight is 200 pounds. You must have an ASTM approved helmet (discussed first day of class) and sturdy footwear with 1/2 inch heel for riding. All levels are invited to attend this course from beginner to advanced. JobsNOW Fundamentals of Automated Machining New

This course introduces machining operations as they relate to the metalworking industry. Topics include: machine shop safety, shop math, measuring tools, and basic blueprint interpretation; introduction and operation of lathes, drill presses, saws, milling machines, bench grinders, and layout instruments. The training will also include: basic CNC introduction, operation, and programming. Motorcycle Safety Education Program

This 20-hour course is part of the NC Motorcycle Safety Program. In this class, riders will learn the basics of operating a motorcycle. The course is held on Friday evenings, and all day Saturday and Sunday. One hundred percent attendance of all scheduled class hours is mandatory. NO EXCEPTIONS! Required gear for all participants: long pants, long-sleeve shirts, boots over the ankle, full-fingered gloves, eye protection (sunglasses or prescription eyewear is permissible), and a DOT approved helmet. Motorcycles will be provided. Cost includes a comprehensive insurance fee of $4. Early registration is required, due to limited space.
