Brian Vaughan, curriculum coordinator for BOC at A-B Tech: "It is vital for businesses to create and sustain competitive advantages. One way to contribute to this is through the reduction of energy costs. The BOC program requires each student to design an Energy Project that includes a plan to reduce utility bills at a sponsoring facility. Additionally, Waste Reduction Partners will offer each student a free on-site energy consultation with one of their experts."

"We are achieving major utility bill savings in State facilities, and well-trained, front-line staff are key to that success. The Building Operator Certification training is an opportunity for any organization with larger buildings to save big on their utility bills, through this training for their building maintenance technicians."     ~  David Wallace, Western North Carolina Program Manager for the North Carolina State Energy Office.

The Director of Waste Reduction Partners, Terry Albrecht: "Waste Reduction Partners endorses the Building Operator Certification training as a practical way to begin saving money on building utility costs. As a partner with A-B Tech, we will offer BOC students free consultation at their place of business, and help them find ways to save energy."

Building Operator Certification is a nationally recognized program offered in 17 states.

Certification Requirements for the BOC:
  • Attendance at 7 of 8 class sessions.  When absence is unavoidable, a make up may be scheduled at the convenience and at the discretion of the instructor.  The first class session must be attended.

  • Successful completion of all in-class open book exams at 70%.

  • Completion of an Energy Saving Project Plan
(since actual implementation may be beyond the control of the student, the requirement is for a plan only.  Students not working in a specific building may be teamed with other students or we will help them find an alternate.  We do strongly encourage implementation of the plan by building owners and/or management in order to realize the savings.)
