Requirements and Curriculum for Diploma Program
Surgical Technology
Surgical technologists are allied health professionals who are an integral part of the peri-operative team providing surgical care to patients in a variety of settings.
Surgical Technology students receive their clinical training in actual Operating Rooms at various surgical facilities in western North Carolina. The College refund policy applies if a student drops the program after being denied clinical site privileges.
This allied health profession was developed during World War II when there was a critical need for assistance in performing surgical procedures and a shortage of qualified personnel to meet that need. Individuals were educated specifically to assist in surgical procedures. From that need, the profession of surgical technology has grown to meet the continuing demand for well-educated, highly skilled, and versatile men and women who work with the surgeon and other skilled professionals to deliver the highest possible level of patient care.
Surgical Technology Course Requirements
This curriculum prepares individuals to assist in the care of the surgical patient in the operating room and to function as a member of the surgical team.
Students will apply theoretical knowledge to the care of patients undergoing surgery and develop skills necessary to prepare supplies, equipment, and instruments; maintain aseptic conditions; prepare patients for surgery; and assist surgeons during operations.
