21st Century Facilities for 21st Century Jobs
Thanks to voter approval of a quarter-cent sales tax increase Nov. 8, 2011, A-B Tech is embarking on a major construction campaign that will provide 21st century facilities to train students for 21st century jobs.
The College hopes to break ground on two major projects – an Allied Health and Workforce Development Building and a Public Service Training Facility – in 2012.

- Nov 8, 2011 – Voters approve a quarter-cent sales tax that will provide $129 million for A-B Tech construction and renovation projects.
- Nov. 15, 2011 – A Presidential Task Force is formed to help guide the development of the construction projects and to communicate to the College and larger community about the progress of repair, renovation and building efforts.
- Dec. 14, 2011 – RFQs (Requests for Qualifications) are issued for design services for the Allied Health and Workforce Development Building and the Public Service Training Facility.
- Jan. 4, 2012 – Responses for RFQs are due.
- Jan. 17, 2012 – The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners approves hiring Legerton Architecture of Asheville and Stewart-Cooper-Newell Architects of Gastonia to design the classroom building at the Public Safety Training Facility.
- Jan. 27, 2012 – The Presidential Task Force approves guiding principles for construction projects.
- Feb. 6, 2012 – The A-B Tech Board of Trustees approves Padgett-Freeman Architects of Asheville and Lord, Aeck & Sargent of Chapel Hill to design the new Allied Health and Workforce Development Building.
- March 9, 2012 – RFQs (Requests for Qualifications) are issued for design services for sidewalks, parking lots and signage improvements on the Asheville campus.
- March 27, 2012 – RFQs are due.
- May 2012 – The programming phase for the new Allied Health and Workforce Development Building is complete and architects begin work on the design phase.
- May 7, 2012 – The A-B Tech Board of Trustees makes a recommendation for a design firm for the Asheville Campus sidewalk, parking lot and signage project. The recommendation goes to the State Construction Office for negotiation.
