Program Description

Service-Learning encourages students to undertake service projects, to reflect on what they learn, and to draw connections between what they learn in the community and what they learn in the classroom.

Some of the benefits students acquire while participating in Service-Learning are: exploring careers, networking, community involvement, improving learning by getting more involved, improving diversity awareness, preparing for future employment, understanding of civic responsibility, building self-confidence and self-esteem, increasing retention, and strengthening resumes.

Program Guidelines

Faculty, individual students, entire classes, or student groups may initiate Service- Learning projects.

Service-Learning projects for class credit are limited to the semester in which the class is offered.

Instructors can incorporate Service-Learning in their class as a requirement or an optional activity.

Students will make appointments and meet with the Service-Learning coordinator to find meaningful projects in the community.

Students, faculty, and the Service-Learning coordinator together will agree on:

                      a)    nature and appropriateness of placement with school or agency

                      b)    hours required

                      c)     class credit earned

The faculty and Service-Learning coordinator will collaborate to evaluate the projects at the end of the semester.

Students may be required to comply with liability and/or confidentiality policies with some agencies.

Some agencies may require background checks and/or drug testing.

The coordinator will be in contact with agencies to ensure continuing project success.
